Teaching controversial & sensitive issues

The teaching of Ireland and Anglo-Irish relations often raises controversial and sensitive
issues.

Thus teachers of Irish history have devised strategies and practical activities to enable
young people develop the skills they need as young citizens when 'faced with decisions
about a wide range of issues on which people have differing, contradictory views'.

Historical Association/DfES workshop
In June 2006, Paul Bracey, UCN, outlined some of these strategies and activities to the
Historical Association/DfES Workshop on Dealing with Sensitive & Controversial Issues.

Courting controversy  Grace O’Malley, ‘Pirate Queen’
Analysing propaganda & stereotypes Tudor conquest of Ireland
Coping with death & disaster Famine in Ireland
